When I Grow Up!
"When I Grow Up" is a fun exercise for children to express what they dream of being someday.
Have each student tell the class what they'd like to be and why. Ask each for a description of their occupation.]
Have students draw themselves in that role.
Select appropriate spelling words that might describe the professions
Make hats or costumes like those worn by professionals.
Choose one or two professions and invite individuals to speak to the class.
Plan a field trip to an animal hospital, T.V. station, etc.
Read To Succeed
On page 46 of our program you will find the lyrics to the "Book Doctor." This twist on the popular song gives children a fun way of looking at the importance of reading. After learning the song, designate one student as the "Book Doctor" and let him or her tell other why reading is so important. Other suggested exercises are:
use a shoe box, students make miniature parade floats with a well known book as a theme.
Let them parade around the room with their finished works.
Make masks from paper bags that represent characters in each child's favorite book.
Plan a trip to the main library in your city.
Conduct a treasure hunt using a series of words to be found in a story you read. Students raise their hand each time they hear one of the words
